India successfully launches Agni-Prime intermediate range missile

(MENAFN) According to reports, India successfully test-fired its Agni-Prime intermediate-range missile using a rail-based mobile launcher, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh announced on Thursday.

The next-generation missile, which can travel up to 2,000 km (1,242 miles), incorporates advanced technology, Singh noted in a post on X.

“The first-of-its-kind launch carried out from specially designed Mobile Launcher, the missile has the capability to move on rail network without any pre-conditions that allows user to have cross country mobility and launch within a short reaction time with reduced visibility,” he said.

Singh highlighted that the test places India among a limited group of countries able to launch canisterized missiles from a rail-mobile system.

The Agni series is developed by India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), the government agency responsible for designing and producing weapons systems. In August, India also successfully tested the Agni-5, a nuclear-capable ballistic missile with a range of up to 5,000 km that can be launched from mobile platforms, capable of reaching targets across most of Asia and parts of Europe.

India is pursuing self-reliance in military hardware, conducting multiple strategic missile tests in recent months. These include the subsonic Nirbhay cruise missile, which has a strike range of 1,000 km, complementing the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile co-developed with Russia.
