I use fungi to develop sustainable materials, creating and testing mycelium-based composites for use as eco-friendly insulation. By growing my own materials in the lab, I explore their structural and thermal properties, aiming to provide a sustainable alternative to petrochemical insulation.
In addition to developing fungi-based materials, I also study their biodegradation through mould growth, ensuring that sustainable homes do not create new risks by harbouring harmful fungi. This work considers both the durability of mycelium composites and the potential health consequences of unintended fungal colonisation in the built environment.
This interdisciplinary journey began with a Master's degree in Physics from the University of Cambridge, where I developed a keen interest in applying science to tackle real-world environmental challenges. While at Cambridge, I founded the University of Cambridge Mycological Society to share my passion for fungi and their transformative potential.
I've presented my work to international audiences in both civil engineering and mycology. Beyond research, I'm passionate about science communication, winning the UK FameLab 2024 competition, performing at the Cheltenham Science Festival, and representing the UK in the international finals. I also engage with my local community by speaking at festivals, organising fungal forays, and hosting talks to raise awareness of fungi's incredible potential to address global challenges.
