AI Tool Projects Risks of Over 1,000 Diseases Up to Two Decades Ahead
(MENAFN) A new artificial intelligence system can forecast an individual’s risk for more than 1,000 diseases, sometimes projecting health outcomes decades into the future, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature.
The study details Delphi-2M, an enhanced language model that uses medical records and lifestyle information to estimate the probability of developing conditions such as cancer, skin diseases, and immune disorders up to 20 years in advance.
Unlike earlier AI tools that focused on predicting single diseases like cancer or cardiovascular issues, Delphi-2M assesses the risk for 1,258 diseases by analyzing a person’s age, sex, body mass index, and habits like smoking and alcohol consumption.
For most diseases, Delphi-2M performed as well or better than existing models that specialize in individual conditions.
The tool was created and tested using anonymized data from 400,000 participants in the UK Biobank and 1.9 million patients recorded in Denmark’s national patient registry.
This advanced AI could transform preventive medicine by helping clinicians identify high-risk patients sooner, allowing for earlier interventions and potentially better health outcomes.
