Record Fish Exports From Bangladesh To India Via Benapole In 202425

(MENAFN- KNN India) New Delhi, Sep 20 (KNN) Bangladesh reached a new milestone in fish exports to India through the Benapole land port during the 2024–25 fiscal year, shipping 13,742 tonnes of farmed fish worth about Tk 470.62 crore.

Of this, 13,210 tonnes comprised freshwater species such as pabda, pangas, parshe, bhetki, tengra, tilapia, and pona. Another 532 tonnes were hilsa.

In comparison, the previous fiscal year saw 8,292 tonnes of fish exported via Benapole, generating over Tk 312 crore. This year's figures represent a nearly 50% increase in both quantity and value.

Jashore district, a key hub of fish farming, also recorded higher production. In 2024–25, total production reached 248,194 tonnes, up from 245,000 tonnes in the previous year.

Fish from ponds and reservoirs made up 150,131 tonnes of the total. Rohu remained the most produced species, followed by tilapia, pangas, prawns, and others.

Despite this impressive growth, exporters are struggling with logistical barriers. Export clearance is currently issued only from Khulna, located 85 kilometres from Benapole. This delay creates difficulties in transporting perishable fish to India.

Exporters have urged authorities to set up clearance facilities at Benapole or Jashore to streamline the process and maximize export opportunities.

On a national level, Bangladesh exported nearly 91,000 tonnes of fish and fish products worth Tk 5,145 crore in 2024–25, which includes shipments routed through Benapole.

The record numbers highlight the growing demand for Bangladeshi fish in Indian markets, while also underlining the need for better infrastructure and quicker clearance processes to sustain the momentum.
