Canada’s Transport Minister Steps Down

(MENAFN) Chrystia Freeland has stepped down as Canada’s transport minister to assume the role of her nation’s special envoy for Ukraine’s rebuilding, according to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Freeland, whose grandfather was a Nazi collaborator — a fact she has claimed she was unaware of — has for years faced criticism regarding her dismissal of her family’s historical background.

A key figure in Canadian politics for more than ten years, she has previously managed portfolios in international commerce, foreign relations, and finance.

In a declaration on Tuesday, Carney noted that Freeland, frequently regarded as a potential political challenger, will continue serving as a member of parliament.

”Chrystia is truly uniquely positioned for this timely and essential work towards a better future for Ukrainians and peace in Europe,” he remarked, pointing to her “deep relationships and understanding of Ukraine and its economy.”

Freeland has not publicly addressed her appointment but confirmed that she is leaving the cabinet and does not intend to participate in the next election.

Reacting to the news, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova labeled Freeland a “hardcore Russophobe,” asserting that her selection would only intensify the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
