UK Prepares to Officially Acknowledge Palestine
(MENAFN) The United Kingdom is preparing to officially acknowledge a Palestinian state this weekend once US President Donald Trump completes his state trip, a news outlet reported on Wednesday, citing government insiders.
Back in July, Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared that the UK would endorse Palestinian statehood during the UN General Assembly in New York this September, unless Israel undertakes "substantive steps" to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and agree to a truce.
The decision to postpone the declaration until after Trump’s departure from Britain was made because it “could have risked deepening tensions with Washington, after Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio offered strong backing for Israel’s ground offensive in Gaza,” according to the report.
A spokesperson for the prime minister stated that the move aims to safeguard the practicality of a two-state resolution.
"Statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people, and it is absolutely critical in protecting the viability of a two-state solution that we make clear that inalienable right," he emphasized.
Last year, Ireland, Norway, and Spain were added to the 147 nations that already officially recognize Palestine.
France also revealed intentions to acknowledge a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly, becoming the first G7 member — an informal group of the world’s seven most advanced industrialized democracies — to make such a step.
