Palestine Warns of Israeli Barriers Around East Jerusalem
(MENAFN) Israel is tightening control over occupied East Jerusalem by surrounding it with military checkpoints and iron gates, with 88 barriers now installed inside the city and nearby areas, Palestinian officials cautioned Wednesday.
According to a statement from the Jerusalem governor’s office, these Israeli restrictions are part of “a systematic policy aimed at isolating the city from its Palestinian surroundings and subjecting its residents to a repressive system of discrimination and segregation.”
The statement noted that new checkpoints have been placed in the towns of Mikhmas and al-Ram, northeast of Jerusalem, as well as in al-Eizariya, located east of the city.
It further accused Israel of “intensifying its crimes to Judaize occupied Jerusalem and erase its Arab and Islamic identity.”
Data published by the Palestinian Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission revealed that the Israeli military has established 904 fixed checkpoints throughout the West Bank.
“Of these checkpoints, nearly 88 were erected in Jerusalem and its villages,” the statement emphasized, describing the restrictions as “a flagrant violation of the human right to freedom of movement.”
The statement urged the UN and the Human Rights Council to “urgently compel Israel to respect its obligations under international humanitarian law and relevant UN resolutions.”
Palestinians consider East Jerusalem as the capital of their prospective state, in line with UN decisions that dismiss Israel’s control of the city in 1967 and its annexation in 1980.
