ABC Suspends Jimmy Kimmel Show
(MENAFN) The US television broadcaster ABC decided on Wednesday to remove Jimmy Kimmel Live from its lineup “indefinitely” after the late-night presenter and comic faced intense criticism for his statements regarding the deadly shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, according to declarations from the channel and its affiliates.
“‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ will be pre-empted indefinitely,” a spokesperson for ABC announced, without providing extra clarification.
A representative for Kimmel did not instantly reply to inquiries for comment.
The dispute originated from Kimmel’s Monday night opening segment, where he implied that Tyler Robinson — the suspect accused of fatally shooting Kirk last week at a Utah university — had ties to US President Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) campaign.
“The MAGA Gang is desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said. “In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving.”
The statements provoked immediate political and regulatory pushback. US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr labeled the comments “truly sick” during an interview with conservative podcaster Benny Johnson, cautioning ABC’s parent company, Disney.
“We can do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to take action on Kimmel or there is going to be additional work for the FCC ahead,” Carr stated.
