Jean-Baptiste Burnet obtained his PhD from the University of Liège (Belgium), before carrying out a postdoc at Polytechnique Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Since 2020, he is working as a Research & Technology Associate at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology. His research has been focusing on source water protection and quality monitoring in a context of safe drinking water supply and he has been investigating the spatiotemporal dynamics of waterborne pathogens (enteric parasites, viruses, bacteria) as well as harmful cyanobacteria and their toxins in water to help better assess and monitor associated public health risks. During his research stay in Quebec, he implemented automated online monitoring of microbial contaminants in drinking water supplies and recreational waters. He also actively contributed to the global effort on SARS-CoV-2 surveillance through wastewater, in Quebec and in Luxembourg. Among other projects, he currently develops an integrated framework for harmful cyanobacteria monitoring in water bodies using latest technological innovations as well as through active involvement of citizens.
