KISR Accredits Radiation Measurements Laboratory As Regional Center For Environmental Monitoring

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) VIENNA, Sept 17 (KUNA) -- Director General of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) Dr. Faisal Al-Humaidan announced on Wednesday that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) accredited KISR's radiation measurements laboratory as regional center for environmental radiation monitoring as part of the Cooperative Agreement for Arab States in Asia for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology (ARASIA).
This came in a statement for KUNA during his participation in the 69th IAEA General Conference held in Vienna.
Al-Humaidan said that this accreditation is a culmination of the laboratory's distinguished technical competencies and its adoption of advanced quality systems, in addition to its outstanding record of cooperation with countries in the region through the IAEA's projects for environmental radiological monitoring.
He noted that the laboratory, through this achievement, will contribute to enhancing regional capabilities in the field of monitoring environmental radioactivity, standardizing measurement and sampling methods, and exchanging data to serve environmental protection and public health in Kuwait and the region.
He pointed out that the laboratory plays a pivotal role in responding to any radiological or nuclear incidents, as it collects environmental samples and analyzes them with high accuracy to provide decision-makers with the data necessary for crisis management in accordance with international standards. It also issues periodic reports confirming the safety of the Kuwaiti environment from the risks of radioactive contamination by monitoring radiation levels in the air, water, and food.
Al-Humaidan emphasized that the radiation measurements laboratory is one of the most advanced in the region, as it includes the latest specialized devices for measuring gamma, alpha, and beta radiation, and advanced systems for monitoring radon gas in the air, water, and soil, in addition to laboratories for preparing environmental samples according to the highest standards.
He said that the laboratory applies a quality system that complies with the standard specification (ISO/IEC 17025) to ensure the accuracy and reliability of results, and regularly participates in the ALMERA International Comparison Program, which is organized annually by the IAEA, which enhances the reliability of its data and confirms its position as an accredited regional scientific reference.
Al-Humaidan concluded his remarks by saying that through this scientific achievement, Kuwait seeks to serve its country and enhance its regional standing under the wise leadership of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, His Highness the Crown Prince, and His Highness the Prime Minister. (end)
