US Imposes Sanctions On Financial Network Supporting Iran
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
WASHINGTON, Sept 16 (KUNA) -- The US Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) Tuesday announced sanctions targeting individuals and entities for facilitating financial transactions that support Iran's military.
The sanctions targeted two financial facilitators and 12 entities for their roles in coordinating funds transfers, including from the sale of Iranian oil, and abusing the international financial system, and evade sanctions by laundering money through overseas front companies and cryptocurrency, the Treasury Department said in a statement.
"The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)-Quds Force, and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL) use these proceeds to support regional terrorist proxy groups and develop advanced weapons systems, including ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which threaten the security of US forces and those of our allies" statement added.
US Department of State Deputy Spokesperson Deputy Spokesperson Thomas Pigott said in a separated press statement that the United States remains committed to disrupting illicit funding streams financing Iran's malign activities.
"As long as Iran devotes its illicit revenues to funding attacks on the United States and our allies, supporting terrorism around the world, and pursuing other destabilizing actions, we will continue to use all the tools at our disposal to hold the regime accountable," he added. (end)
