Gas Blast Claims 14 Lives in Mexico City

(MENAFN) Health officials in Mexico City reported on Monday that the fatality count from last week’s devastating gas explosion on one of the city’s busiest highways has now reached 14. The city administration has held the truck driver responsible for the disaster.

According to a statement posted on social media by the city’s health department, the death toll has surged from the initially reported three casualties last Thursday. In addition to the fatalities, 39 individuals remain hospitalized, while 30 patients have been released after showing signs of recovery.

The blast took place on September 10 at Puente La Concordia, a critical roadway linking Mexico City to adjacent states. The event shook the city as harrowing images and reports of severely burned victims rapidly spread across social media platforms.

On Monday, authorities confirmed that the explosion was caused by the truck driver speeding while carrying 49,000 liters of fuel. Prosecutor Bertha Alcalde revealed that initial investigations showed the truck collided with a containment wall on the highway, overturned, and subsequently exploded.

Alcalde also dismissed online rumors suggesting that structural faults in the highway might have played a role in the accident.
