Sushila Karki Becomes Nepal’s Interim Premier
(MENAFN) Nepal’s ex-Chief Justice, Sushila Karki, officially assumed the role of provisional prime minister on Friday, after intense unrest led to the removal of the democratically chosen administration led by KP Sharma Oli.
Immediately after President Ramchandra Paudel conducted Karki's "oath of office," the former judge recommended disbanding the 275-member legislative body to pave the way for new national elections.
President Paudel swiftly endorsed the suggestion and formally disbanded the parliament elected in 2022, as reported by a news agency.
The tentative date for the national vote has been scheduled for March 5, placing it over half a year away.
This development aligns with demands from the widely labeled "Gen Z" movement, which has reshaped the political dynamics in the mountainous country following violent demonstrations that erupted on Monday.
The temporary government’s primary responsibility is to organize new elections, delve into the causes and impact of the Gen Z protests, and investigate corruption and the wealth of political figures.
Karki is anticipated to form her ministerial council over the weekend.
The formation of this transitional leadership came after lethal demonstrations starting Monday, which resulted in at least 51 fatalities and left hundreds wounded, ultimately compelling the removal of Prime Minister Oli’s elected government.
