Merz harshly denounces Israel over its attacks on Qatar

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz harshly denounced Israel's breach of international law and aggressive military actions in the region, saying Berlin will await discussions with EU partners on possible sanctions.

Taking part in a press conference with EU Council President Antonio Costa in Berlin, Merz once again condemned Israel's attacks aiming at Hamas’ representative team in Qatar's capital Doha, and emphasized the significant part Qatar has taken to achieve a truce in Gaza.

Merz stated: "this was a military strike by the Israeli army that violated international law, that violated the territorial integrity of Qatar, which is a country that, more than most others, has endeavored to play a mediating role in this conflict and has been very helpful so far."

As Merz stressed that the duty Germany has towards Israel’s safety because of the nation’s Nazi history, he emphasized that this dedication doesn’t halt criticism of certain actions by the administration of PM Benjamin Netanyahu. For example, its enormous military operation in Gaza as well as limitations on humanitarian assistance to Palestinians.
