Nepal’s ex-Chief Justice assume role of interim PM
(MENAFN) Nepal’s ex-Chief Justice Sushila Karki officially assumed the role of interim prime minister on Friday after violent demonstrations led to the removal of KP Sharma Oli’s government.
Shortly after President Ramchandra Paudel swore her in, Karki recommended dissolving the country’s 275-member parliament to pave the way for new elections. According to reports, Paudel approved the proposal and dissolved the legislature that had been elected in 2022.
The national vote is scheduled for March 5, giving more than half a year for preparations. This timing reflects the demand of the “Gen Z” protest movement, which has dramatically reshaped Nepal’s political environment since unrest broke out on Monday.
The transitional government has been tasked with overseeing the elections, probing the Gen Z demonstrations, and investigating corruption and the wealth of political figures. Karki is expected to finalize her Cabinet selections over the weekend.
The interim arrangement follows protests that have claimed at least 51 lives and left hundreds wounded. The fatalities include 21 demonstrators, three police officers, nine prisoners, and 18 other individuals, according to police sources.
