GAIL India To Build Bio-CNG Plant In Karnataka After Land Allotment

(MENAFN- KNN India) Bengaluru, Sep 12 (KNN) State-run GAIL India witnessed a slight rise in its share price after the Karnataka government officially allotted land to the company for setting up a compressed biogas (CBG) plant.

The decision was recently approved by the Karnataka Cabinet, marking a step forward in promoting clean energy initiatives in the state.

The upcoming plant will be located in Haralakunte village in Bengaluru South. Around 18 acres of land have been earmarked for the project, which will initially have a production capacity of 300 tonnes per day.

The facility also has provisions to scale up capacity to 500 tonnes in the future based on demand. Before the land handover, the state's Revenue Department and Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd. will survey the site and prepare official maps for formal transfer.

Compressed biogas, commonly known as Bio-CNG, is produced from organic waste and refined to about 90% methane content. It is considered an eco-friendly and renewable substitute for conventional fossil fuels, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support sustainable energy goals.

This project is part of GAIL's broader plan to establish 26 CBG plants across India through direct operations and joint ventures. These plants represent a combined investment of about Rs 1,300 crore.

GAIL's first such plant, which processes municipal solid waste, started operations in Ranchi in October 2024. The company is also working with TruAlt Bioenergythrough its subsidiary Leafinti Bioenergy Ltd. to set up 10 additional CBG plants.

This initiative aligns with India's broader push towards cleaner energy sources and sustainable waste management.
