Saudi Arabia Hails Iran-IAEA Agreement
(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia on Wednesday praised the newly reached agreement between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) aimed at resuming cooperative nuclear inspections, emphasizing its support for initiatives that reduce regional tensions.
In an official statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry acknowledged Egypt’s pivotal role in mediating the deal between Tehran and the UN nuclear watchdog. The ministry underscored “the importance of building trust, adopting diplomatic solutions, and continuing cooperation between Iran and the IAEA.”
The agreement was finalized on Tuesday in Cairo after a meeting between IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, where both sides settled practical details to restore inspections. Grossi expressed gratitude to Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty for facilitating the understanding.
This development follows Iran’s suspension of cooperation with the IAEA after US and Israeli attacks on Iranian targets in June, which Tehran condemned as biased actions by the agency.
At the time, Iran was involved in nuclear talks with the United States mediated by Oman when Israel launched an unexpected strike on June 13, hitting military, nuclear, and civilian locations, including high-ranking military officials and nuclear scientists.
In response, Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks, while the US targeted three Iranian nuclear facilities. The 12-day confrontation ended with a US-brokered ceasefire on June 24.
