South Africa Rebukes Israeli Airstrike on Qatar as “Unprovoked"

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, South Africa "unequivocally" condemned Israel's recent airstrikes on Qatar's capital, Doha, describing the assault as "illegal and unprovoked."

The airstrike, aimed at Hamas leaders, constitutes “a blatant violation of international law, breaching the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, while also compromising the safeguarding of civilians,” according to a statement from the South African Foreign Ministry.

The statement highlighted that the attack was a "flagrant violation" of Qatar's sovereignty, particularly since the Qatari government plays a "prominent role" in mediating a ceasefire in Gaza and securing the release of hostages held by Hamas.

In a show of support for Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the Qatari government, Pretoria has called for an immediate ceasefire and a halt to military operations in Israel's genocidal campaign against Palestinians, emphasizing the need to start negotiations for a fair peace.

On Tuesday, Israel's military confirmed it had executed a "precise strike targeting the senior leadership" of Hamas.

Qatar quickly condemned the "cowardly" attack, asserting that the strike had impacted residential buildings housing members of Hamas's political bureau.

Qatar, in conjunction with the United States and Egypt, has been a crucial mediator in efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of over 64,600 Palestinians since October 2023.
