Macron Names Sebastien Lecornu as New Premier
(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday designated Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu as the nation’s new head of government, according to a declaration from the Elysee Palace.
Lecornu steps into the role after Prime Minister Francois Bayrou failed a confidence vote in the National Assembly on Monday.
As stated by the Elysee Palace, Lecornu has been entrusted with initiating discussions with political parties before assembling his cabinet.
The purpose is to “build the necessary agreements for the decisions of the coming months."
According to the statement, "The prime minister's actions will be guided by the defense of our independence and our power, the service of the French people, and political and institutional stability for the unity of the country."
It further noted that "The president of the republic is convinced that on these bases, an agreement between the political forces is possible while respecting the convictions of each."
Lecornu is the only minister who has continuously held government positions since Emmanuel Macron assumed office in 2017.
At 39 years old, his career includes serving as Secretary of State to the Minister of Ecological and Inclusive Transition, Minister Delegate for Local Authorities, and Minister of Overseas Territories,
before becoming Minister of the Armed Forces.
The departing prime minister, who introduced a 2026 budget outline in July, had sought backing for a strategy aimed at saving nearly €44 billion ($51 billion) to address France’s mounting national debt, which has climbed to 113% of its GDP.
