Poland Shuts Down Major Airports After Drones Intrude on Airspace

(MENAFN) In a sudden move on Tuesday night, Poland closed four of its major airports, including Chopin Airport in Warsaw, the country’s busiest, following what officials described as "unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security." The shutdowns were confirmed through notices posted on the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) website.

The closures were triggered after Poland reported that "drone-type objects" had violated its airspace, with the origins believed to be from neighboring Ukraine. This incident heightened tensions in the region, which has already been fraught due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

On Wednesday, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz elaborated on the country’s response, stating that the Polish air force had taken defensive measures, including deploying weapons against the hostile objects that entered its airspace.

These actions reflect Poland's heightened security posture as it navigates increasingly complex relations with its eastern neighbor and the ongoing instability in the region. Further details on the nature and extent of the military activity remain unclear, but the closures have raised significant concerns about potential further disruptions to air traffic.
