Iran, IAEA Agree to Restart Nuclear Cooperation
(MENAFN) Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reached a pivotal agreement on Tuesday to resume cooperation, as confirmed by Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi.
Araghchi shared the news during a joint press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
The agreement outlines that both parties will work to enhance their cooperation while respecting Iran's sovereignty and ensuring the safety and security of the Iranian people. Araghchi emphasized that Iran would not again compromise its nuclear policy or its rights.
Abdelatty highlighted Iran’s willingness to return to negotiations on its nuclear program, adding that Egypt is playing a key role in bridging the views of European countries and Iran, as well as easing tensions in the region.
Abdelatty stated that Egypt continues to uphold its commitment to fostering both regional and international stability.
Meanwhile, Grossi took to the social media platform X, announcing that the agreement would allow for the resumption of nuclear inspections in Iran. He described the development as a "step in the right direction that opens the door for diplomacy and stability." Grossi's post included photos of him signing the documents with Araghchi.
This breakthrough comes after Iran had suspended its cooperation with the IAEA in June, following Israeli-U.S. strikes on its nuclear facilities and the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists. In response to the suspension, Iran demanded that all inspections by the IAEA be approved by its Supreme National Security Council, and that guarantees for the safety of its nuclear sites and scientists be provided.
Before the Cairo talks, Iran and the IAEA held discussions in Vienna on Friday and Saturday, setting the stage for the successful resumption of dialogue.
