Ethiopia Introduces Africa’s Largest Hydropower Facility
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially inaugurated the $4.5 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the continent’s biggest hydroelectric initiative, during a ceremony joined by regional heads and international representatives.
Initially commenced in 2011 under the leadership of the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, the massive structure on the Blue Nile is engineered to produce 5,150 megawatts of power, aiming to relieve persistent energy shortages and boost electricity exports.
Although praised as a project funded entirely by domestic resources, Egypt and Sudan have repeatedly expressed apprehension regarding its possible consequences on their water security.
Ethiopia maintains that the dam stands as a representation of national solidarity and a move toward regional collaboration, promising significant advantages for countries downstream as well.
