Nepal President Poised to Establish New Government

(MENAFN) Nepalese President Ramchandra Paudel is initiating efforts to establish a new government after accepting the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Monday, following violent protests that left at least 20 people dead.

Oli stepped down amid widespread unrest sparked by a controversial social media ban and allegations of corruption, which escalated into deadly clashes, reported My Republica. The protests, largely driven by youth, also resulted in nearly 350 injuries.

A presidential advisor confirmed that Paudel is engaging with key parties to move forward with the government formation process in accordance with the Constitution.

The turmoil erupted after Oli’s government imposed a ban on social media platforms, demanding these multinational companies open offices within the landlocked Himalayan country. The decision ignited mass protests in Kathmandu, where demonstrators stormed public buildings, political party offices, and even breached the parliament building, setting it ablaze.
