Türkiye Arrests Nine in Attack on Izmir Police Station

(MENAFN) Authorities in Türkiye’s western port city of Izmir have arrested nine individuals linked to a fatal assault on a local police station, according to local media reports Monday.

The assailant, a 16-year-old identified as E.B., was apprehended following the attack, during which he sustained injuries. Officials have confiscated his mobile phone and computer, while a specialized team is currently analyzing his online and GSM communications for further insights.

As the investigation expanded, two more suspects were detained in Ankara, one in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa, and an Iranian national was arrested in Istanbul. The total number of detainees has now reached nine, including the teenager, his parents, and two of his friends, a broadcaster reported.

The attack unfolded around 8:50 a.m. local time (05:50 GMT) at the Salih Isgoren Police Station in the Balcova district, where the assailant fired a pump-action shotgun. The assault resulted in the deaths of two police officers and injuries to two others, as well as a civilian. One of the wounded officers remains in critical condition.

Izmir Governor Suleyman Elban confirmed the shotgun used belonged to the suspect’s father and noted that the teenager, who is a high school student, had no previous criminal record.

Authorities are actively investigating whether the attack had any links to terrorism.
