Colombia's Inflation Climbs To 5.10%, Pinching Wallets And Policy


(MENAFN- The Rio Times) DANE reported August's annual inflation at 5.10%, up from July's 4.90%. Housing and utilities added 1.46 points as rents and public-service fees rose.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages contributed 1.16 points, driven by higher mango, pineapple, avocado, yuca and plantain prices. Dining out and hotels added 0.85 points as Colombians increased restaurant visits.

On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.19%. Food and drinks added 0.08 points, restaurants 0.06 and goods and services 0.02. Electricity prices fell slightly, while gas costs edged up due to low production.

Pereira led regional inflation at 5.97%, followed by Bucaramanga at 5.85% and Armenia at 5.65%. Santa Marta recorded 2.11%, Valledupar 3.47% and Sincelejo 3.56%.

Persistent inflation above 5% challenges the central bank 's 3% goal and keeps its policy rate at 9.25%. Families face tighter budgets, and businesses must adjust pricing and investment plans. Continuous monitoring and agile planning remain crucial as price pressures persist.
