Poland, Allies Dispatch Jets in Response to Russia’s Attacks on Ukraine
(MENAFN) Polish and allied aircraft were dispatched early Sunday morning in response to Russia’s latest airstrikes on Ukraine, close to the Polish border. This marks the second such response in just a week, according to the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command, which described the move as a precautionary measure.
"Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness," the command stated on X.
As diplomatic efforts from the US and EU to halt the conflict in Ukraine remain stalled, Russia appears to have intensified its offensive. Ukrainian authorities reported that eight people were injured during an overnight bombardment.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk sharply condemned the attack on Kyiv, calling it "a sign that further hesitation and attempts to appease (Russian President) Vladimir Putin are futile." He urged "US and European nations to compel Russia to agree to an immediate ceasefire."
Tusk also vowed last week to increase efforts to counter drones entering Polish airspace. A drone wreckage was found on Saturday in Lublin, eastern Poland, after crashing just meters away from the village of Majdan-Sielec.
The drone will be handed over to forensic experts for further analysis, Polish media reported. "The on-site inspection confirmed that the drone was not equipped with a combat warhead," said Rafal Kawalec, spokesperson for the Zamosc Prosecutor's Office.
