Japan’s Ex-Foreign Minister Motegi Joins Race for LDP Leadership
(MENAFN) Former Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi announced his candidacy for the leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) after Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's decision to resign, according to media on Monday.
Motegi, who previously served as LDP secretary-general, expressed his desire to dedicate himself to the nation, leveraging the extensive experience he has gained both within the party and government.
Ishiba's resignation came on Sunday, prompted by increasing pressure for him to take responsibility for the LDP's recent election defeats.
In a significant blow to the government in July, the LDP-led ruling coalition lost its majority in the House of Councilors, signaling deepening public dissatisfaction with the administration.
This loss followed a similar outcome in the October 2024 snap election for the House of Representatives, resulting in the ruling bloc losing its majority in both chambers of parliament—an unprecedented outcome since the LDP's founding in 1955.
In the wake of Ishiba’s resignation, the LDP is expected to discuss the structure and timeline for the leadership contest.
Some party members are advocating for broader participation, proposing that rank-and-file members, in addition to Diet members, have a say in the race as part of efforts to rejuvenate the party.
Motegi is not the only figure seeking to lead the LDP, as other prominent party members have also expressed interest in the presidency.
LDP Secretary-General Hiroshi Moriyama emphasized the importance of finding ways to enable members to directly participate in the leadership selection process.
Eyes are also on other potential candidates from last year's LDP leadership contest, including former Economic Security Minister Takaichi Sanae, who reached the runoff with Ishiba, Agriculture Minister Koizumi Shinjiro, who won the highest number of votes among Diet members in the first round, and Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa.
