ICE Kicks Off Sweeping Crackdown on Criminal Immigrants in Boston
(MENAFN) U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has initiated a sweeping crackdown in Massachusetts, with Boston serving as the focal point, according to a report by media.
The campaign, dubbed Operation Patriot 2.0, began over the weekend and is slated to continue for several weeks, officials familiar with the plan told the publication. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) described the operation as an effort to apprehend “the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens living in the state.”
In a forceful statement issued Saturday, DHS warned: “If you come to our country illegally and break our laws, we will hunt you down, arrest you, deport you, and you will never return.”
This operation unfolds just days ahead of a similar enforcement surge expected to kick off in Chicago under the Trump administration, alongside a rise in immigration arrests in Washington, DC.
An anonymous U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to lack of authorization to speak publicly, told media that plans are underway for an even larger enforcement escalation in the near future.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has come under intense fire from the administration due to her support for sanctuary city policies. In its statement, DHS directly criticized her, claiming she places public safety risks ahead of the well-being of law-abiding American residents.
Adding to the pressure, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit last week challenging Boston’s sanctuary ordinance, known as the Boston Trust Act.
“The City of Boston and its mayor have been among the worst sanctuary offenders in America,” U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi declared, as cited by media.
ICE officials said Operation Patriot 2.0 primarily targets immigrants released from local custody despite federal detainers. According to a homeland security official who spoke to the paper, some individuals targeted reside outside Boston but were freed from city jails.
