Trump Hints at Fresh Sanctions Against Russia
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump announced Sunday that his administration is prepared to escalate punitive measures against Russia, moving toward a second round of sanctions as diplomatic efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict remain stalled.
When asked by a reporter outside the White House whether he was ready to implement "the second phase of sanctions against Russia," Trump replied, "Yeah, I am." He offered no further clarification.
According to a report from media last week, Trump has become increasingly doubtful that negotiations will yield a resolution to the crisis in the near future. Citing two senior administration officials, the outlet noted Trump no longer expects a face-to-face meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to happen soon.
As tensions persist, a significant escalation occurred overnight into Sunday when a major government facility in central Kyiv was hit during a barrage of Russian drone and missile attacks, multiple U.S. media outlets reported.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed that the strike marked the first instance since the conflict began in which Kyiv’s main government building sustained damage.
