The Peshawar High Court has issued a written judgment on petitions seeking Pakistani citizenship for Afghan children born in the country and their parents, directing the federal interior ministry to process the applications within six months.

The verdict, authored by Justice Waqar Ahmad, instructed the petitioners to approach the Ministry of Interior under the relevant law and submit formal applications. The court further ordered the ministry to examine the applications thoroughly and issue clear directives within the stipulated timeframe.

During the hearing, the petitioners' counsel argued that his clients were Afghan refugees who had married in Pakistan, with their children born and educated in the country. On these grounds, he maintained, they were entitled to naturalization certificates.

The judgment recalled that in 2024, the court had also delivered a detailed ruling, declaring that individuals born in Pakistan and residing here for extended periods were eligible for certificates under the Naturalization Act.

Disposing of the petitions, the court reiterated that the interior ministry must act strictly in accordance with the law when deciding such applications.
