KABUL (Pajhwok): An Afghan businessman residing in Russia has donated 42.5 tons of food supplies to earthquake victims in eastern Afghanistan, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Friday.

Just before midnight on Sunday, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the provinces of Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman, Panjshir and Nuristan, causing significant casualties and widespread destruction - with Kunar suffering the most damage.

According to the latest figures, the death toll in Kunar has reached 2,205, with 3,640 people injured and 6,782 homes destroyed. Authorities warn that these numbers could still rise.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the NDMA said it had received 42.5 tons of food supplies donated by the Afghan businessman for the affected populations in Laghman, Kunar and Nangarhar provinces.

The aid package includes:

  • 1,000 sacks of 25 kg flour
  • 1,000 sacks of 12.5 kg rice
  • 1,000 bottles of 5-liter cooking oil

The NDMA, citing its director, stated that the aid would be distributed in a transparent and equitable manner following a comprehensive assessment.
