Slente Vows To Raise Refugee Issue With Pakistan, Iran
KABUL (Pajhwok): Secretary General of the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) Charlotte Slente has pledged to raise the concerns over the situation of Afghan refugees with Iran and Pakistan officials on the sidelines of the upcoming United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting.
She also confirmed that the DRC had already dispatched emergency aid to eastern Afghanistan following recent earthquake.
She said this at a meeting with Minister of Refugee and Repatriation Maulvi Abdul Kabir, the Ministry of Refugee and Repatriation (MoRR) said.
A powerful earthquake, recorded at a magnitude of 6.0 by the US Geological Survey, struck around midnight on Sunday.
Kunar province suffered the heaviest losses, while Nangarhar, Laghman, Panjsher and Nuristan provinces were also affected by the disaster.
On Wednesday, Fitrat said at least 1,457 people had been killed so far, 3,394 wounded and 6,782 houses destroyed in Kunar alone.
A statement from the ministry quoted Slente as describing the forced expulsion of Afghan refugees from Iran and Pakistan as a matter of concern.
She pledged to raise these concerns directly with Iranian and Pakistan officials and to highlight the issue of Afghan refugees on the sidelines of the upcoming UNSC meeting.
For his part, Maulvi Abdul Kabir said the people displaced by the quake were in urgent need of food and non-food assistance.
He said the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) has tasked a committee to organise aid distribution effectively and ensure it reached those most in need.
He stressed the importance of cash assistance and reconstruction of destroyed houses, urging international organisations not to withhold support with the displaced families.
He also noted the IEA was striving to create employment opportunities for returnees and seeking durable solutions to the refugee crisis.
On July 29, MoRR announced nearly two million Afghans had returned from Iran and Pakistan in three months, of whom 1.8 million had been forcibly deported.
