Redoctane Returns To Rethink Rhythm Gaming

A studio responsible for shaping the early Guitar Hero phenomenon has re-emerged under the Embracer Freemode umbrella as RedOctane Games, marking a deliberate advance in rhythm gaming. Led by Simon Ebejer-who guided production on multiple Guitar Hero titles at Neversoft and later held senior roles at Vicarious Visions and Blizzard-the new venture unites original co-founders Charles and Kai Huang in advisory roles, combining seasoned industry veterans with emerging rhythm‐game creators.

The studio is already well into production of its inaugural title, following months of pre‐production, with the first reveal anticipated before year‐end. The Huang brothers, who launched RedOctane in 1999 and led its ascent through the original Guitar Hero releases, now return in a strategic capacity to guide the studio's direction.

Ebejer has emphasised the ambition to craft a new rhythm experience rather than a revival of past franchises.“This game won't be Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, Guitar Freaks or Rock Band. This is something new,” the team stated, underscoring a commitment to innovation rooted in community and modern sensibilities.

The studio's formation has been informed by vibrant fan‐driven projects, such as open‐source initiatives like YARG and community favourites like Clone Hero, which have kept rhythm gaming alive even as mainstream releases waned. This suggests RedOctane aims to merge those grassroots energies with professional development and fresh creative vision.

Supporting this revival, CRKD-a hardware venture formed by former RedOctane designers under Embracer Freemode-has recently released a Gibson Les Paul guitar controller compatible with titles including Fortnite Festival, creating hardware continuity that could complement the new studio's offerings.

Industry commentary frames this move as a reboot with both respect for the past and eyes on the future. Observers note that while the era of five‐fret guitar games once seemed over, ongoing fan enthusiasm signals a resurgence opportunity-and RedOctane Games appears to be positioning itself at this nexus of nostalgia and modern design.

Within Embracer Freemode, known for fostering indie‐style creativity alongside established IP stewardship, RedOctane Games brings a high‐profile heritage to a broader strategy of genre‐focused innovation.

At this early stage, the name, mechanics and features of RedOctane's debut title remain under wraps, but the expectation among fans and the wider industry is building ahead of its unveiling later this year.
