(MENAFN- Live Mint) Earthquake today: Tremors of 5.8 magnitude struck Argentina's Salta on Thursday, September 4, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said. According to EMSC, the seismic activity occurred at a depth of 192 km (119 miles).

Another quake of 6 magnitude on the Richter scale struck United States' Alaska. The tremors were felt 87 km Southwest of Nikolski at 8:57 PM (local time) on September 3.

Almost 4 days ago, a 6 magnitude devastating earthquake struck Afghanistan. According to Taliban government's data released on Wednesday, the death toll from the earthquake in eastern Afghanistan crossed 1,469, leaving more than 3,700people injured.

The strong tremors damaged houses, buried people under debris and destroyed villages. One of the deadliest quakes in decades "affected more than 500,000 people" in eastern Afghanistan, UN refugee chief Filippo Grandi informed AFP. As per the report, vast majority of the casualties were mainly in Kunar province. Around a dozen people died and hundreds were injured in nearby Nangarhar and Laghman provinces.

Why was the Afghanistan quake deadly?

The earthquake that struck before midnight on Sunday, August 31, in a mountainous region near Jalalabad, close to the Pakistan border, was a shallow quake that occurred at a depth of 8 km.

According to UN's resident coordinator for Afghanistan, Indrika Ratwatte, when the walls of mud and wooden homes collapse, the roof falls on the occupants, leading to injury or death. He further noted that the fatalities were high as during the tremors on Sunday night most people were asleep.
