Slovenia Pledges USD4.66M to UNRWA
(MENAFN) Slovenia will allocate an additional 4 million euros (approximately 4.66 million U.S. dollars) to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) between 2025 and 2028, the country's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs announced Tuesday.
The funding commitment was formalized in an agreement signed by Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon and UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini during the Bled Strategic Forum, Slovenia’s flagship conference on foreign policy and economic affairs.
"UNRWA continues to play a key role in ensuring essential services for Palestinian refugees. This partnership confirms our dedication to humanitarian principles, regional stability, and the protection of the rights and dignity of Palestinian refugees," Fajon said in a written statement.
The latest pledge builds on Slovenia’s ongoing support for UNRWA, which has received 2.55 million euros from the country since the onset of the Gaza conflict in October 2023. Lazzarini expressed appreciation for the continued backing, stating: "strong political and financial support" from Slovenia is vital to sustaining the agency’s mission.
Slovenia, which currently holds a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, officially recognized the State of Palestine in June 2024. The nation has consistently advocated for a ceasefire and lasting peace in Gaza.
Peace efforts were also a dominant theme at this year’s Bled Strategic Forum, marking its 20th edition under the title “A Runaway World”, held over Monday and Tuesday.
