Amman, Sept. 2 (Petra) – Prime Minister Jafar Hassan on Tuesday inspected the Civil Status and Passports Department (CSPD), where he reviewed the services offered to citizens and the recent technological advancements, particularly the rollout of the electronic passport.
Accompanied by the Ministers of Interior and Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, the prime minister toured service sections and emphasized the need to expand digital transformation, streamline services, and eliminate obstacles, especially the ongoing requirement by some entities for document certification. He stressed that digital documents available via the Sanad application should replace certified paper copies.
Hassan underlined the importance of linking the CSPD data with other institutions, particularly Sharia courts, to ease citizens' access to services. He also called for improvements to facilities and infrastructure, especially in governorates, and for broader service delivery through integrated government service centers, noting that citizen satisfaction remains the key benchmark for performance.
The prime minister highlighted the National Plan for National Archives for citizen documents and stressed the importance of continuing the historical archiving initiative, which has already digitized 83 million documents since the department's establishment. He also reviewed the new e-passport service launched via Sanad earlier this month, stressing the need to extend the model to other key documents, such as ID cards, while also considering the extension of passport validity.
The CSPD Director-General Ghaith Tayeb outlined the department's achievements, including the launch of the e-passport, which marks a major upgrade in government service modernization at international technical and security standards, offered at the same fee of JD50. He said the CSPD has built a secure national database based on the national number, launched 25 e-services and 6 digital services out of its 58 offerings, and mandated the exclusive use of the Sanad app for issuing vital certificates.
According to Tayeb, making certificates available only via Sanad since May has boosted digital transactions from 3.8% to 26% in just four months, enabling citizens inside and outside Jordan to access certificates at any time, including outside official hours and on holidays. He added that services such as passport renewal and family book issuance will be digitized by year's end.
The department is also advancing digital ID activation, electronic payment systems, and has eliminated paper forms in favor of digital submissions. It has connected 45 Jordanian embassies and missions abroad to its database and expanded services through government service centers, which have processed more than 378,000 transactions and operate until midnight.
Tayeb confirmed that the CSPD continues to digitize all documents issued since its founding, with 83 million archived so far, while improving infrastructure and reducing the number of underused offices in line with the broader digital transformation and service expansion strategy.
