BEIRUT, Aug 28 (KUNA) -- Lebanese President Joseph Aoun received a phone contact from his French counterpart Emmanuelle Macron who expressed support for the government plan to restrict arms possession in the state hands.
Macron indicated in the contact that a related executive scheme, to be worked out by the Lebanese Army to regulate the weapons' presence, is widely supported at the international and European levels, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the Lebanese Presidency.
Aoun thanked Macron for coordinating with the US and other states reaching consensus on a UN Security Council resolution extending mission of the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon until 2027.
According to the Lebanese statement, the UNSG member states reached an accord on extending the mission until the end of 2027, with mandate of the operational mission lasting for a year and four months and that the year 2027 to be devoted for the troops' gradual departure from Lebanon.
Aoun said during the conversation with Macron that the consensus among the UNSG member states was an advance step that would help the Lebanese Army complete its deployment until the international recognized borders after complete withdrawal of the Israeli occupation forces, cessation of hostile acts and release of the Lebanese prisoners held by Tel Aviv.
Moreover, the official statement revealed that the two presidents discussed preparations for holding two international conferences, one for Lebanon's reconstruction and the other for supporting the army.
It also quoted Macron as underscoring necessity of achieving the warranted financial and economic reforms to pave the way for holding the two conventions. (end)
