Egyptian FM Holds High-Level Talks In Slovenia, Urges EU Pressure On Israel
During his visit to Bled, Abdelatty also held a separate session of talks with Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon, and participated in a panel discussion at the Bled Strategic Forum.
In his meeting with President Pirc Musar, the Egyptian minister conveyed greetings from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and praised the friendship and mutual understanding between the two countries. He reviewed Egypt's efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and alleviate the humanitarian suffering, and invited the president to attend the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum.
For her part, the Slovenian president expressed her appreciation for Egypt's“important and constructive role” in the region and its handling of complex regional files, foremost among them the Palestinian issue.
During his talks with Foreign Minister Fajon, Abdelatty discussed the“catastrophic” humanitarian situation in Gaza, which he said had reached the point of famine. He stressed that Israel's continued aggression and expansion of its military operations, as well as its settlement and displacement policies, would only undermine the chances of establishing an independent Palestinian state. He called for the EU to pressure Israel to lift restrictions on aid and respond to the current ceasefire proposal.
The minister praised Slovenia's support for Palestinian rights, including its formal recognition of a Palestinian state and its provision of medical care to wounded children from Gaza.
In a panel discussion at the forum titled“Reviving Leadership and Multilateralism in a Time of Division and Conflict,” Abdelatty said the absence of diplomacy and the resort to military options have expanded conflicts and increased human suffering worldwide.
He addressed the challenges facing international organisations, stating that with the rise of international crises and some countries' disregard for international law, the multilateral system is suffering a loss of trust due to its inability to confront double standards.
He presented Egypt's vision for reforming the multilateral system to be more democratic and representative of Arab and African countries, including reform of the United Nations and the Bretton Woods institutions. He also highlighted the BRICS group's role in supporting economic cooperation and sustainable development among the countries of the Global South.
