An Egyptian railway crossing guard is accustomed to blowing his whistle to warn pedestrians of oncoming trains and keep them safe. But on one occasion, the whistle alone was not enough-he felt the urge to leap into action himself.

Tarek Mohammed, a guard at Sadat Bridge level crossing in the city of Bani Soueif on the west bank of the River Nile, was standing by the tracks as usual, guiding people in the street and blowing his whistle when needed.

One day, a young man ignored the warning whistle and continued toward the railway. Recognising the imminent danger, Tarek acted without hesitation, rushing forward to push him to safety.

The swift action saved the man's life just moments before a speeding train passed, narrowly missing him by seconds. Both Tarek and the man survived and no injuries were reported.

In an interview with local newspaper Youm 7, Tarek commented on the incident by saying:“I consider what I did a duty, not a heroic act. What matters most to me is that people take notice and never underestimate the level crossing-it's not a game or an adventure; it's certain death.”

"At that moment, I felt that a single second could mean the difference between life and death. I didn't calculate anything or think about myself," he added.

In June, social media platforms in Egypt were abuzz with a similar selfless incident , when a truck driver lost his life after driving his burning truck away from a gas station in the city of 10th of Ramadan, in Egypt's Sharqia Governorate, saving scores of lives in the residential area.

The act an act earned widespread praise from both official and public circles in Egypt, with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly mourning the heroic driver and issuing directives to grant his family a generous financial reward in appreciation and recognition of his bravery.
