Yemen Declares Flood-Hit Al-Buraiqeh Disaster Area
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
ADEN, Aug 23 (KUNA) -- Al-Buraiqeh District in Yemen's temporary capital, Aden, was declared a disaster area on Saturday by the local authority due to torrential floods that caused human casualties and widespread property and infrastructure damage.
The local authority said in a statement that the floods coming from the province of Lahj towards the Al-Haswa coast destroyed dozens of homes and partially damaged hundreds more.
The floods also cut off the main road to the district, leaving hundreds of families stranded.
The situation is catastrophic and worsening as floods continue to flow from various governorates and converge in the district on their way to the Gulf of Aden, according to the statement.
The Yemeni authorities appealed to United Nations organizations, humanitarian agencies, governments, and donors to urgently provide emergency shelter kits, basic food items, logistical support for rescue and evacuation teams, and mechanisms and suction pumps to drain stagnant water.
Heavy rains and torrential floods have been plaguing most Yemeni provinces for days, intensifying on Saturday and leaving dozens dead and several others missing.
Many roads have been cut off, vehicles have been swept away, and dozens of homes have been destroyed in various Yemeni provinces, especially those under the control of the legitimate Yemeni government. (end)
