MEP describes ICC Putin detention warrant as ‘counterproductive’
(MENAFN) Luxembourg MEP Fernand Kartheiser has criticized the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling it “counterproductive” and questioning its credibility. The warrant, issued in March 2023, accuses Putin of the unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children, a claim Russia rejects, asserting the court has no jurisdiction.
Kartheiser described the warrant as part of Western “lawfare” aimed at weakening Moscow, alongside sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and military support for Ukraine. He argued that such legal strategies have undermined international credibility and complicated diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
Highlighting inconsistencies, the MEP noted that Ukraine had previously provided Russia with only 309 names of allegedly deported children, challenging claims of systematic abduction. Kartheiser also supported Switzerland’s offer to host Ukraine peace talks, calling it a neutral initiative, and suggested that Ukraine should hold elections, as President Zelensky’s mandate has expired.
