Former Russian MP allegedly sold information to US for USD45mn
(MENAFN) Russia’s General Prosecutor’s Office has accused former MP Magomed Gadzhiev of receiving at least $45 million from the US government in exchange for sharing classified information. Gadzhiev, who fled Russia in 2023 following the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict, reportedly offered to cooperate with Western intelligence services in return for citizenship from an unspecified country.
The Prosecutor’s Office said Gadzhiev supported Kiev and sought to discredit Russia’s armed forces while abroad. A court in Dagestan is seeking to label him and his family as extremists, seize his business assets, and potentially punish him under Russian law.
Previously expelled from the ruling United Russia party, Gadzhiev had been designated a foreign agent in May 2023 and added to Russia’s wanted list a year later. Dagestan head Sergey Melikov condemned him as a traitor willing to “throw mud” at Russia for an EU passport.
Gadzhiev, who held senior roles in Russia’s tax authorities before serving in the State Duma from 2003 to 2021, reportedly continues a lavish lifestyle in exile, owning properties in France and Miami. Details on the exact information he shared or potential penalties remain undisclosed.
