Syrian And Israeli Officials Hold Talks In Paris With U.S. Mediation
Syria's state news agency has reported that Foreign Minister Asad al-Shibani met an Israeli delegation in Paris on Tuesday to discuss regional stability and southern Syria.
Israeli Channel 12 earlier noted that Ron Dermer, Israel's Strategic Affairs Minister, was expected to participate in the talks. U.S. envoy for Syria Tom Barrack also attended, traveling from Beirut to join the meeting.
According to Reuters, the discussions focused on reducing tensions and ensuring non-interference in Syria's domestic affairs. Both sides also examined ways to revive the 1974 ceasefire agreement, which established a United Nations buffer zone in the Golan Heights.
Syrian and Israeli officials are currently engaged in negotiations mediated by Washington aimed at de-escalating the volatile situation in southern Syria. The talks come after months of unrest and violence in the region.
In July, fierce clashes broke out between Druze militias and Sunni tribes in southern Syria. Government forces intervened on the side of the tribes, intensifying the conflict, which left hundreds dead.
Israel has since carried out dozens of airstrikes against Syrian government positions, including an attack on the Defense Ministry building in Damascus, in what it described as support for Druze groups.
The Paris meeting signals a tentative step toward dialogue after years of hostility. However, deep mistrust remains, and any progress will depend on sustained mediation and willingness from both sides to ease hostilities.
Regional analysts caution that while the talks may calm immediate tensions, the broader conflict dynamics in Syria-including foreign interventions and sectarian divisions-remain unresolved and continue to pose serious risks to long-term stability.
