WWIA's Great Creek Turkey Hunt in Alberta, Virginia is a proud and grateful beneficiary of Fort Myer Thrift Shop's Community Grant Program.
Apollo Beach, Fl - August 19, 2025 - The Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation (WWIA) would like to recognize and thank Fort Myer Thrift Shop for their remarkable support. Fort Myer Thrift Shop is a private nonprofit organization located on the Myer campus of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Virginia. They raise money through a combination of both monetary donations and the sale of donated or consigned items. The shop has a small staff of six people along with a number of volunteers who help to keep the store organized and ready to serve the local community.
In 2024, Fort Myer Thrift Shop proudly donated $176,000 to provide college scholarships to 15 military dependents and one spouse, and also awarded 20 community grants to military groups and charities. For 2025, the Fort Myer Thrift Shop has awarded 22 scholarships totaling $80,200, and community grants totaling $115,800. The Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation has been a grateful recipient of their charitable grants. In fact, Fort Myer Thrift Shop has been proudly supporting WWIA since 2015, generously donating $47,000 over the past decade to help further their mission of serving, honoring, and healing America's combat-wounded Purple Heart Veterans through therapeutic and adaptive outdoor sports like hunting and fishing.
Wounded Warriors often return home differently than when they left to serve our nation; finding that their personal and professional lives are impacted by their war related experiences. WWIA in coordination with an incredible team of hosts, volunteers, donors, and supporters across North America helps show Purple Heart recipients that they can still experience and accomplish great things, no matter their current circumstances.
WWIA's world-class outdoor events help these combat-wounded veterans achieve a level of satisfaction and achievement that has often been missing from their lives. Although hunting and fishing can be an exciting part of these outdoor adventures, the main event on these trips is the opportunity to connect with fellow Purple Heart recipients and to be welcomed warmly by local communities across North America who honor them for their service and sacrifice.
Fort Myer Thrift Shop's Community Grants Coordinator, Brenda Nadijcka, explained the reason they proudly support military charities like WWIA.“We are honored to give assistance to organizations that provide services and support to our military and veterans. We endorse the mission of WWIA and are glad to play a small part in the healing and recovery of veterans who served.”
Each WWIA event serves an average of 3-5 Heroes and lasts anywhere from 2-5 days on average, allowing for optimal bonding, brotherhood and camaraderie. These events help bolster self-confidence while strengthening the bond with nature, local communities and other Purple Heart veterans. Whether these Heroes suffer from traumatic brain injury, permanent limb disability or post-traumatic stress disorder, these connections are critical to the healing process.
WWIA Founder and CEO, John McDaniel, explained, "The Veterans who have bravely served and defended our country deserve our utmost respect and support. The Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation cannot do what we do without the generosity of patriots like Fort Myer Thrift Shop. Their remarkable support has truly healed hearts and saved lives of America's combat-wounded Purple Heart Heroes. We are humbled by their tremendous partnership and support throughout the past decade, and grateful to call them our allies and friends."
The Fort Myer Thrift Shop is Open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10:00am - 2:30pm, and on Saturday from 10am-2:30pm.
