Over 150 go missing in flood-hit northwest Pakistan

(MENAFN) More than 150 people remain missing in northwest Pakistan following devastating flash floods that have killed at least 344, the head of the provincial disaster agency reported Sunday.

Thousands of rescue workers are struggling through heavy rain and knee-deep mud to dig out homes and search for survivors. In Buner district, at least 150 individuals are unaccounted for, possibly trapped under rubble or swept away by floodwaters, according to Asfandyar Khattak, head of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority. Dozens more are reported missing in Shangla district.

Ongoing rainfall is severely hampering rescue operations. Power outages and damaged mobile networks have left areas like Buner without electricity or communication, complicating relief efforts.

In Buner alone, at least 208 people have died, and 10 to 12 villages have been partially buried, a provincial rescue spokesman said. Around 2,000 rescuers are working across nine districts to recover bodies and aid survivors, despite continued heavy rain slowing progress.
