Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Agency Chief Faces Possible Charges
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, has instructed prosecutors to draw up charges against the head of the anti-corruption agency SAPO, according to a news agency, which cited law enforcement sources on Monday.
The development comes as a corruption scandal involving Zelensky’s close associates continues to send shockwaves through the financially strained nation.
Earlier this month, SAPO, alongside its counterpart NABU, accused Timur Mindich—a longtime business partner and close confidant of Zelensky—of orchestrating a $100 million kickback scheme in the energy sector, an industry heavily reliant on Western support. Mindich reportedly fled the country to avoid arrest.
The revelations prompted the resignation of two government ministers and fueled demands for deeper scrutiny of Zelensky’s administration.
Among those under scrutiny is Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who had previously negotiated a defense deal with Mindich.
The news agency reported that, in response to the scandal, Yermak “once again tasked investigators to prepare charges” against SAPO chief Aleksandr Klimenko.
A source close to Zelensky’s office told the newspaper that the Ukrainian leader had summoned the heads of NABU and SAPO, but “the conversation didn’t go anywhere.”
The Ukrainian Security Service and the Prosecutor General’s Office dismissed the news agency’s report as “completely false.”
