Centre Urges Food Industry To Adopt Ethical Labelling And Advertising Practices

(MENAFN- KNN India) New Delhi, Aug 14 (KNN) At a National Stakeholder Consultation titled“Comprehensive Analysis of Regulatory Framework on Food Labelling, Advertisement and Claims,” the Government of India renewed its call for ethical practices in the food sector.

Organised by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the consultation drew participation from around 700 stakeholders-including government agencies, industry representatives, consumer groups, academics, and experts.

In her opening remarks, Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava highlighted the urgency of keeping pace with global best practices.

She stressed that as consumers increasingly engage with the global marketplace, it is crucial to enhance scrutiny of food products and align promotional practices accordingly.

Echoing this, Nidhi Khare, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, called upon the industry to prioritise honest communication. She urged manufacturers to make“truthful and honest declarations” and strongly discouraged misleading advertisements.

Khare emphasised that food labelling must serve as a bond of trust between producers and consumers-not merely as a marketing tool. She asserted that consumers should be fully informed and empowered to make their own choices.

The event also featured expert sessions on the global and Indian regulatory frameworks related to food labelling and advertising, including practical case studies on enforcement, titled“From Claims to Compliance.”

These discussions fostered collaboration across government, industry, academia, and consumer rights organisations to strengthen transparency and public confidence.
