Türkiye Invests in Kyrgyzstan to Boost Clean Energy

(MENAFN) Orta Asya Investment Holding, a branch of Türkiye’s Ihlas Holding, has unveiled the specifics of its investment deal with the Kyrgyzstan government to develop six hydropower plants.

These facilities will have a combined installed capacity close to 2,217 megawatts.

The investment, estimated at around $6.3 billion, will be carried out across two distinct river basins.

According to the company’s announcement, this initiative ranks among the largest private sector energy ventures in the region.

The project is designed strictly in accordance with the EU Taxonomy for sustainable activities, aiming to directly enhance sustainability, climate resilience, and the security of energy supply in the region.

Described as a groundbreaking and long-term undertaking, the plan not only seeks to modernize Kyrgyzstan’s infrastructure but also supports the worldwide transition to clean energy.

The developments are structured to make a direct impact on the UN Sustainable Development Goals 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and 13 (Climate Action).

Once fully operational, the hydropower plants are expected to produce more than 9 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually while reducing roughly 5.2 million tons of CO2-equivalent emissions compared to coal-fired power generation.

Besides strengthening the stability of power grids in the region, the project will encourage cross-border energy collaboration and align with the EU-Central Asia Global Gateway Strategy, which emphasizes green investments and sustainable infrastructure projects.
