National Guard appears in Washington’s streets amid Mayor criticism
(MENAFN) US National Guard troops have started appearing on the streets of Washington DC following President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy them and assume control of the city’s police force, citing concerns over violent crime, according to reports.
Armoured vehicles were observed at key urban areas and tourist sites on Tuesday evening. Authorities say around 800 National Guard personnel, along with 500 federal law enforcement agents, are expected to be active in the city.
Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat who has disputed claims that crime is out of control, described the deployment as an “authoritarian push.”
Trump, a Republican, has also threatened similar actions in New York and Chicago, two other Democratic-led cities. He has claimed that violent crime is rising in these areas, including Washington DC. However, data from Washington DC’s Metropolitan Police indicates otherwise. Violent offences, which peaked in 2023, fell in 2024 to their lowest level in 30 years and continue to decline in preliminary figures for 2025. Overall violent crime is down 26% this year compared to the same period in 2024, with robberies falling 28%.
