UN security council denounces violence targeting civilians in Sweida
(MENAFN) The United Nations Security Council issued a strong condemnation on Sunday against the recent violence targeting civilians in Sweida, a predominantly Druze area in southern Syria.
In a presidential statement, the council voiced serious concern over the sharp rise in violence in Sweida since mid-July, which has included mass killings and significant internal displacement. The statement called on all involved parties to respect the existing ceasefire and to ensure the safety of civilians, regardless of their ethnic or religious background.
The Security Council also welcomed investigations initiated by Syria’s interim authorities but emphasized that these probes must meet international standards by being credible, prompt, transparent, impartial, and thorough. The council stressed the importance of holding all responsible parties accountable and bringing perpetrators to justice.
Additionally, the council firmly rejected any form of harmful interference in Syria’s political, security, and economic transitions. It underscored the need for a political process that is inclusive, led, and owned by Syrians themselves.
